The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office announced on April 16 that a San Francisco man has been charged with the murder of a Richmond resident in connection with a shooting that occurred in March 2021.
The case involves serious charges and highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address violent crime involving alleged gang activity. The charges carry significant enhancements related to firearm use and gang participation.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, Reno Goldie Fiapoto, age 26, faces two counts: the murder of Derrick McDougal—who was 21 at the time of his death—and unlawful active participation in a criminal street gang. The murder charge includes three enhancements: active membership in a criminal street gang, discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury and death, and purposefully discharging a firearm at McDougal.
Authorities say McDougal was killed on March 16, 2021, around 8:40 am on the 2200 block of Barrett Avenue in Richmond. After an investigation spanning several years and involving the Richmond and San Francisco police departments as well as the FBI and Major Crimes Task Force, Fiapoto was arrested on April 14. The case was then referred to prosecutors for formal charges.
Fiapoto appeared for arraignment at the A.F. Bray Courts Building Annex in Martinez at 1:30 p.m., where he remains held without bail at the Martinez Detention Facility. Judge Glenn Kim will preside over further proceedings. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27 at 8:30 am.
