The Contra Costa County Public Works Department announced on March 10 that it will begin installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard and Diablo Road/Blackhawk Road starting March 16, with work expected to continue through June 3.
The project aims to improve safety and traffic flow in the Danville and Diablo area by replacing the current three-way stop signs with a modern traffic signal system. The installation is scheduled for weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with lane closures limited between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Drivers are advised to expect delays of five to ten minutes during construction.
In addition to the new signal, operational improvements will include adding a dedicated right turn pocket for southbound Mt. Diablo Scenic Boulevard onto westbound Diablo Road, eliminating the existing sweeping right turn lane at the T-intersection. Funding for these upgrades comes from Davidon Homes as part of mitigation for its Magee Preserve development, as well as contributions from the Town of Danville’s traffic mitigation funds and local road funds from Contra Costa County’s gas tax.
The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining over 650 miles of roads, managing streams and channels, overseeing county buildings, and providing services such as parks maintenance, flood control, storm water management, and airport operations at Buchanan Field Airport in Concord and Byron Airport in Byron.
