Contra Costa Animal Services announced on Mar. 10 a program to place healthy adult cats, which are not socialized to humans, into new homes as part of its Working Cat Program.
The initiative aims to provide these cats with opportunities to live outdoors while serving as natural pest and rodent deterrents. The program is designed for cats that are not suitable for traditional adoption due to their lack of socialization with people.
According to Contra Costa Animal Services, the working cats have been successfully placed in locations such as barns, farms, parks, and other properties where rodent problems exist. The agency said these cats require only a safe shelter and regular access to food and water.
The personalities of the working cats vary from semi-friendly to skittish. Some may be visible during mealtimes, while others tend to hide until it is safe. Adopters have reported positive results regarding the effectiveness of these cats in controlling pests.
Those interested in adopting a working cat are encouraged by Contra Costa Animal Services to complete an application through their website.
