The 2025 California Building Code (CBC) will take effect on January 1, 2026. According to the implementation schedule, projects that require both planning approval and building permits and receive their planning approval between July 1, 2025, and December 31, 2025, will have a one-month grace period. This allows applicants to apply for building permits under the current 2022 CBC until January 31, 2026.

The definition of “Planning Approval” in this context refers to projects that have fulfilled all requirements and conditions set by the Current Planning Division as prerequisites for applying for necessary building permits.

After January 31, 2026, all new building permit applications must comply with the updated standards outlined in the 2025 CBC.
